It's one of the questions that almost everyone in the clay and chalk community has wondered about, but very few people talk about openly.
Do you spit, or do you swallow?
There are passionate supporters of both, and if you've spent any time in Facebook groups, TikTok comments or watching ASMR videos, you'll know everyone has their own preference. Here on Earthy Crunch UK, I don't judge either way, and I want to be completely transparent about where I stand.
My position
My products are sold for sensory, hobbyist and ASMR use only. I do not encourage swallowing them. Whether you enjoy the sound, the aroma, the earthy flavour, the satisfying texture or simply the relaxing sensory experience, what you choose to do afterwards is entirely your own decision.
I know, however, that many people do choose to swallow. Pretending otherwise would be disingenuous. Rather than ignoring that reality, I've chosen to invest in home testing of my products to give customers added peace of mind. That doesn't make my products food grade or suitable for consumption, and it certainly isn't an endorsement to eat them. It simply reflects my belief that being open with this community is better than burying my head in the sand. Ultimately, any personal use is entirely at your own discretion.
Why do some people swallow?
Again, this isn't encouragement. It's simply an honest look at why some people choose to. Some say swallowing lets them enjoy the full earthy flavour from beginning to end, a more complete sensory experience, and the satisfying feeling of finishing the whole piece. Others point to cultural traditions where certain natural clays have historically been consumed, or simply personal preference, sometimes the simplest answer is just that they want to. For many, it's no different from preferring one texture over another. It's simply how they choose to enjoy the experience.
Why do some people spit?
Just as many people prefer not to swallow at all. For them, the crunch is the reward. Once they've enjoyed the sound, texture and flavour, they're done. Many ASMR creators also spit rather than swallow, especially during longer videos where consuming large amounts simply wouldn't be practical. Others choose to spit because they're mindful of potential digestive discomfort.
Possible downsides of swallowing
Natural clay and chalk aren't ordinary foods, and swallowing them may not suit everyone. Some of the concerns people discuss include constipation, particularly if larger amounts are swallowed, digestive discomfort, feeling overly full, and individual sensitivities that vary from person to person, on top of the fact that these products aren't food-grade certified. Some people never experience any issues, while others find even small amounts don't agree with them. Everyone's body is different.
The benefits of spitting
Choosing to spit can have a few practical advantages. You still get to enjoy the satisfying crunch, the earthy flavour, the aroma, the texture and the ASMR experience, while avoiding introducing large amounts of clay or chalk into your digestive system. Many people also find they can enjoy longer sensory sessions without feeling uncomfortable afterwards.
There's no community rulebook
One thing I've noticed over the years is that people sometimes feel pressured to do what everyone else appears to be doing online. The reality is there isn't a correct way. Some people swallow every time. Some never do. Others switch between the two depending on the product. None of those choices make someone more or less part of the community.
Do what feels right for you
My role isn't to tell adults what personal choices they should make. My role is to be honest. I don't promote swallowing, and I don't pretend nobody does it. I recognise the reality of this community while making it clear that any personal use is entirely your own responsibility.
Whether you're here for the crunch, the earthy flavour, the nostalgia, the textures or simply because watching chalk crack is oddly satisfying, the most important thing is making informed decisions that you're comfortable with. No judgement. Just honesty.
