Why Does My Clay Arrive in Crumbs?

You eagerly open your parcel, peel back the tissue paper and...

Your beautiful clay block has turned into a bag of crumbs.

Has something gone wrong?

Usually, no.

In fact, if you've ordered natural clay, chalk or earthy treats, finding a few broken pieces is completely normal. Unlike factory-made sweets or biscuits, these products come straight from the earth, and nature doesn't always survive the postal system in perfect condition.

Here's why your clay sometimes arrives looking a little more "rustic" than expected.

Clay is naturally fragile

Most of the products we stock have never been fired in a kiln or chemically hardened.

They're simply dried naturally.

That gives them the textures people love, from soft and creamy to crisp and crunchy, but it also means some varieties are surprisingly delicate.

Even a solid-looking block can contain tiny natural fractures that you can't see from the outside. A small knock during transit is sometimes all it takes for those cracks to separate into smaller pieces.

It doesn't mean the clay is old, poor quality or incorrectly packed.

It's simply the nature of the material.

Every journey is different

Your parcel might travel hundreds of miles before reaching your door.

Along the way it could be:

• sorted by automated machinery

• stacked beneath heavier parcels

• loaded into vans several times

• driven over potholes and speed bumps

• handled by multiple depots

Even with careful packaging, natural clay can move around inside the box.

Most parcels arrive looking exactly as packed, but occasionally gravity wins.

Some clays are more fragile than others

It's worth remembering that this doesn't happen with every type of clay.

How well a product survives the postal journey largely depends on its natural hardness and how it has been processed.

Many of our Indian clays are naturally much tougher. Some are traditionally roasted, giving them a denser structure, while favourites like the Nakumatt varieties are renowned for their exceptionally crunchy, hard texture. These are generally much more resilient during shipping and are less likely to crumble into smaller pieces.

On the other hand, you can reasonably expect some breakage with many of our softer chalks and raw earths sourced from across Latin and North America. Products such as Terrón Panela and other naturally dried clays have a much softer, more delicate structure, making them more susceptible to cracking or crumbling in transit.

This isn't a fault, it's simply a reflection of the product's natural characteristics. In fact, those softer, crumbly textures are exactly what many people are looking for, and one of the reasons these clays are so popular within the community.

We sell by weight, not by shape

This is one of the most common misunderstandings.

At Earthy Crunch UK, products are sold by weight, unless otherwise stated.

Whether your 100g arrives as:

• one large piece

• three medium pieces

• several smaller chunks

• a mixture of chunks and crumbs

...you'll still receive the advertised weight.

Natural products don't all break in the same way, so the appearance can vary from order to order.

Crumbs are still perfectly usable

Don't be too quick to dismiss the smaller pieces.

Lots of people deliberately break their clay before using it because it creates a completely different sensory experience.

Crumbs can be ideal if you enjoy:

• smaller bites

• sprinkling textures

• sampling different pieces

• mixing varieties

• reducing waste

Some customers even tell us they secretly hope their order arrives with a few extra crunchy bits.

Can you stop clay breaking completely?

Unfortunately, no.

We package every order with care using recyclable, plastic-free materials designed to protect your products while keeping our packaging as environmentally friendly as possible.

However, we can't control what happens once parcels leave us.

Natural earth products will always carry a small risk of breaking during transport.

If someone promises perfectly intact clay every single time, they're making a promise no courier can realistically guarantee.

When should I contact you?

We're always happy to help if something genuinely isn't right.

Please get in touch if:

• your order is missing items

• the incorrect products were sent

• your parcel has arrived severely damaged

• you believe there's a problem beyond normal breakage

A few cracked pieces, loose chunks or crumbs on their own aren't considered faults. They're simply part of buying natural clay.

Sometimes the best bits are the broken ones

Ask experienced members of the clay community and many will tell you the same thing.

The smaller pieces often reveal textures hidden inside larger blocks.

Some are crisp.

Some are creamy.

Some are wonderfully dusty.

Others hide tiny mineral crunches that you'd never have discovered otherwise.

So if your clay arrives looking a little less picture-perfect than you'd imagined, don't panic.

Nature rarely produces perfect squares, and that's part of the charm.

At Earthy Crunch UK we carefully pack every order to give it the best chance of arriving safely. But because these are natural products, a few crumbs or broken pieces are sometimes simply part of the journey.

After all, it's still exactly the same clay, just in a slightly different shape.
