“A loud, clean snap from dense Kazakh clay that cracks into flakes when it meets boiling water.”

Yellow Ural Clay is a naturally occurring mineral clay from the Ural region of Kazakhstan. It arrives in solid, irregular, unprocessed chunks shaded anywhere from pale yellow to soft blue, and no two pieces are quite the same. Dry, it's firm, compact and monolithic with a sharp, clean snap. Drop it in boiling water and it audibly cracks and splits into thin, irregular flakes, then once it's dried out again it comes back more fractured, layered and slightly brittle. Nothing else in my range changes this much depending on how you prep it.

The Crunch Profile

Texture: Dense, dry, non-plastic chunks with a firm bite and a loud, clean snap. Boiled and re-dried, it turns flaky, layered and more brittle.

Flavour: Deep earthy minerals with a dusty-after-rain base and a smooth, slightly milky finish

Crunch factor: 4 – Hard/Medium

ASMR: Loud, satisfying snap

Aroma: Classic dusty-after-rain, with faint stone and dry soil notes that come through more as you chew

Hydration: Cracks and fractures into thin flakes in boiling water; once re-dried it becomes multi-layered and brittle rather than simply softening

Good to Know

  • Clay soaks up smells in transit. When yours arrives, leave it to air out somewhere dry and well ventilated, away from strong smells, for 24 to 48 hours and the original taste and crunch come back.
  • Natural chunks, so colour, size and shape vary from bag to bag.
